St Martin’s church

Triptych of the Holy Spirit
Bernard de Rijckere
Vlaamse Meesters in Situ Sint Maartenskerk Kortrijk

The winter chapel or St Anne’s chapel hides yet another gem: Bernard de Rijckere’s 1587 Triptych of the Holy Spirit (Triptiek van de Heilige Geest), which depicts the baptism of Jesus and the creation of Adam. The central scene in this Pentecost piece shows The Descent of the Holy Ghost upon the Apostles whose symmetrical composition puts Mary with folded hands and a book open on her knees at its centre.

St Martin’s church

The current church of Saint Martin was built between 1390 and 1466 as a hall church with three aisles, replacing the first gothic St Martin’s church which had been destroyed. Its 83m-high tower in Brabantine gothic is downright impressive, the more so as its wooden spire houses a 49-bell carillon, restored in 1974.

Open on weekdays from 7.30 am to 6 pm, Saturday and Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm (from 1 October to 31 March to 5 pm)
