Church of Our Lady of the Chapel

Copy after Rubens
Onze-Lieve-Vrouw ter Kapellekerk

This particular work was painted by the master himself around 1613-1615 after it was commissioned by his friend and fellow artist Jan Brueghel de Oude to adorn the memorial to his parents, Pieter Bruegel de Oude and Maria Coecke van Aelst. When the work was sold in 1765, however, it was duly replaced with a copy paid for by the buyer which can still be admired in the church today.

Church of Our Lady of the Chapel

Many valuable paintings and other masterpieces such as magnificent statues of the apostles were and are still kept at this church, the main place of worship in a parish with lots of painters and tapestry makers in times of yore. Back in the 17th century, the church was even the proud owner of three paintings by Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) and his studio!
