Church of Saint Nicholas

The Descent from the Cross
Pieter Thys
Vlaamse Meesters in Situ Sint-Nicolaaskerk

Above the altar hangs the 17th-century painting The Descent from the Cross by Pieter Thijs, which was inspired by his teacher Antoon van Dyck and hung above the original 1672 high altar made by Mechelen sculptor Lucas Faydherbe (1617-1697) of which elements still remain.

Church of Saint Nicholas

This grand, five-aisle mainly gothic church dubbed ‘cathedral of the Waasland region’ was under construction for centuries and is still the oldest in the city. The interior, though, is mainly baroque and neo-gothic. Its 18th-century extension houses a museum displaying the church treasure, which includes richly decorated gold and silver pieces, precious liturgical objects and garments.
