Vlaamse Meesters in Situ Middelburg

This work of art, dating from 1630-1631, was made by Bruges painter Jan Ricx and was commissioned by the church council in order to adorn the church’s main altar. It’s the copy of a triptych, now on display in Berlin, and painted between 1445 and 1460 by the renowned painter Rogier van de Weyden by order of Pieter Bladelin, who was a member of the elite in 15th century Bruges. The theme is the incarnation and veneration of the Infant Jesus. In the centre of the representation, we see Pieter Bladelin kneeling before the newborn Child.

Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul

This Gothic church (with cemetery) was built on the initiative of Pieter Bladelin, a senior official of the Burgundian dukes. His castle was nearby, and his tomb is located in the church. It was he who, from the 1450s, developed Middelburg into a genuine city. At the end of the 19th century, the church was restored and extended in the neo-Gothic style. It possesses a very exciting church treasury.
