This summer, the Flemish Masters in situ arts trail shines spotlight on Flemish top pieces that can still be found in the places they were originally commissioned for. Like the portraits of the four evangelists by baroque painter Theodoor van Loon in the Church of Saint Catherine.

For the project, Jan Van Outryve composed a musical sketch inspired by van Loon’s four paintings. He departed from the chiaroscuro technique, so typical for van Loon’s work, and collaborated with Stefan Bracaval to come up with a piece for soprano, bass flute and electronics.

The composition entitled Shir-hashirim attempts to connect van Loon’s works and revolves around parts of the Song of Songs, one of the most beautiful passages in the Old Testament about love and humanity.

Shir-hashirim can be heard all summer in the church. During the concert itself, other works from the time of Theodoor van Loon will feature as well.
