Large White Statue - Lucien De Gheus
Lucien De Gheus started his career in 1953 by participating in the West Flanders Provincial Sculpting Competition. The Large White Statue, depicting a shapely female figure, won second prize and marked a breakthrough in his life. Movement and dance are typical characteristics of his oeuvre. This statue also reflects a distinct dynamic. It shows dance as a new way of moving. The work, originally made of plaster, was cast in bronze on behalf of the Foundation. The plaster cast and original ceramic scale model are on display in the Museum House.
Horseman and Horsewoman - Lucien De Gheus
The Horseman and Horsewoman sculpture is part of a series of three works dating back to 1958-1959. The first in the series was called Knight of Love and won a gold medal in ceramics at the Expo 58 world exhibition in Brussels. As a result Lucien De Gheus gained a place amongst the group of postwar ceramists, which included the artists Olivier Strebelle, Joost Maréchal and Pierre Caille. The second in the series, Rodeo in Brussels, was purchased by the Municipal Museum Ypres. Only the third sculpture, Horseman and Horsewoman, remained part of the De Gheus collection. His artistic style is characterised by stylized shapes, inlays and decorative elements.
